We appreciate everyone's ongoing patience and support, especially since we are still uncertain as to the government guidelines that will be in place for larger events toward the end of the summer. We are currently working through various scenarios for the medieval weekend with the host venue (Herstmonceux Castle), and we will have more news very shortly. Thanks very much, and we look forward to seeing you on the August Bank Weekend!

Thanks very much for your patience with regard to the launch of our ticket sales for the 2021 Festval. We had planned to start ticket sales in December 2020, however given the changing circumstances regarding the covid virus pandemic, we did not feel that the time was right to start selling tickets. The situation seems to be improving very slowly and all indications from government authorities are that by the end of August 2021 we should be in a much better position to have most people protected and be able to gather safely at events. We have had many people contacting us about purchasing ticket for this year, and we really appreciate your support. We now plan to launch our 2021 festival ticket sales in February. (Note that any 2020 tickets that were Rolled Over to 2021, will be re-issued as soon as possible after we launch of 2021 sales). Thanks very much, and we look forward to seeing you on the August Bank Weekend!

For anyone who has booked a Festival ticket for this year, we had previously stated there would be an option to use your ticket from this year and receive a credit for the balance for next year, however this option has proved to be too difficult to administer, so you will now have two options (both of which were included in an email sent to all Festival ticket holders this past week):

First Option is that you can request to roll-over your ticket(s) to next year’s Festival (which we hope you will do!)

Second Option is that you can request a refund.

Please use the following online form for the Request for Your Tickets

We would ask that you please complete this change form before 22 August 2020, after which there will not be any refunds and all tickets will be rolled over to 2021.

Tickets to Visit Herstmonceux Castle on the August Bank Weekend 2020

You can book or Re-book tickets for the Medieval Celebration at Herstmonceux Castle (Day only) at the regular Castle Grounds and Gardens entry prices as a result of the changes to the format.  All Day tickets to visit Herstmonceux Castle can be purchased from the Herstmonceux Castle Ticket Page

Thank you again for your support and understanding.

Your Questions: We are sure that you will have questions and we would be happy to answer them, but please bear with us over the next number of days as we continue to get our administration all organised. There is a lot to be done, and we will be doing it as quickly as possible. We thank you for your patience. You can contact us at tickets@mgel.com

The Plan for this Year has Changed Herstmonceux Castle to host a Medieval Weekend Celebration on the August Bank holiday, however it will ‘not be a Festival’ as it has been in past years, due to health and safety restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

The Most Recent Change to our Plan  With a little under 3 weeks to go we have been assessing final plans for this year and trying to keep up with the ever changing statistics and Government Guidance, to help ensure the safety our staff, stewards, performers, re-enactors and the general public who come to the castle over the August Bank holiday weekend.

After carefully reviewing the current restrictions we do not feel there is any safe way to accommodate all the Traders, Re-enactors, and Performers plus members of the Public who would be camping/staying on the site overnight over the weekend, whilst still adhering to health and safety restrictions and guidelines that are required.

As such the ‘Medieval Weekend Celebration at Herstmonceux Castle’ on the August Bank holiday weekend, will be Day Event only.

There will be No Weekend camping or glamping or B&B accommodations, and no evening entertainment, food or drink.

We are still limiting the number of public visitors on the grounds at any one time.

There will Not be any large-scale siege of the castle, open field battles, grand parades, falconry shows, musical or theatrical stage shows, and unfortunately no Jousting.

What You can Expect as you enter the beautiful grounds and gardens of Herstmonceux Castle on the August Bank holiday weekend (28, 29, 30& 31 August 2020):

- All Day tickets will be purchased from the Herstmonceux Castle Ticket page

- Colourful Medieval Living History tents will be placed around the castle

- Medieval re-enactors demonstrating their skills (at a safe distance behind rope lines)

- Medieval, Craft & Retail and Food/Drink Traders Market

- Have-a-go activities children and adults, with separated spaces, and santitised equipment for every use

- Designated picnic areas, where you can feast on food and drink (ideally purchased from our traders), or picnics

- Entry to the castle courtyard across the moat, through the outdoor courtyard and into the walled gardens

- Woodland Trails, Magic Gardens and a rope Maze

Day Entry to the Herstmonceux Castle Grounds and Gardens for the Medieval Weekend Celebration is from 10am to 6pm daily, rain or shine on 28, 29, 30 or 31 August 2020.

Weekend Entry - a decision has now been made that for the safety and best interests of all members of public, staff and the community at large that there will not be able to have weekend camping on the grounds this year. We know this is very disappointing news, and we are very sorry to have to announce this. We will be offering every weekend ticket holder the option to roll-over their tickets to 2021 or receive a refund. And of course, we hope that you will consider coming to the castle grounds for a day out on the 28, 29, 30 or 31 August 2020.

Camping (Tents & Caravans) & Glamping Tents - since there will be no Weekend ticket/camping, no tents or caravans will be allowed to stay on the castle grounds overnight, and we will not be hiring glamping tents. (As mentioned above, anyone who has booked these tickets can either roll-over their booking to 2021 or receive a refund.

B&B Rooms will not be available on the castle grounds. (Anyone with existing bookings can roll-over their booking or receive a refund)

Evening Entertainment There will not be any evening entertainment, beer/food marquee, evening bands, torch-lite parades or outdoor cinema.

Medieval Banquet will not take place this year due to the restrictions for indoor gatherings and entertainment. All pre-purchased tickets can be rolled over to 2021 or refunded.

What Does this Mean for Tickets?

Tickets for the Medieval Celebration at Herstmonceux Castle (Day only) will be reduced to the regular Castle Grounds and Gardens entry prices as result of the changes to the format. They can be purchased from the Herstmonceux Castle Ticket page

For anyone who has booked a festival ticket for this year, you will have three options - although we hope that you will only choice one of the first two options, and not the third option :)

First Option is that you can use your ticket to come the castle this year on one of the days from 28 to 31 August 2020, and you will be given a credit towards a ticket for next year’s Festival! (We will contact you by email to select a day)

Second Option is that you can request to roll-over your ticket(s) to next year’s Festival!

Third Option is that you can request a refund.

The Plan for this Year is for Herstmonceux Castle to host a Medieval Weekend Celebration on the August Bank holiday, however it will ‘not be a Festival’ as it has been in past years, due to health and safety restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

Why are We Doing this?  For the past 27 years the medieval weekend at Herstmonceux Castle has been an annual end of summer tradition that so many people look forward to attending every year; and we hope that the picturesque castle, the beautiful grounds and the medieval atmosphere will be a positive and memorable highlight in what has been a difficult last six months.

The Herstmonceux Castle management team has been extremely supportive of having a medieval weekend celebration this year as part of a visit the castle; and the estate team has been working very hard through the lockdown to maintain the grounds and gardens for everyone to wander around and enjoy.

Our medieval re-enactors, performers and market traders are also looking forward to their first opportunity of the year to interact with you, entertain you or make sales.

For Your Safety we will be making changes to what you will experience on the castle grounds to provide the highest level of safety and enjoyment for everyone.

We will be following the directions from the UK Government and relevant health authorities as to what we can and cannot do to maintain the safe health of the participants, guests and the community at large. This includes online ticket sales, contactless payments, hand sanitizer stands, toilet monitors with additional cleaning, one direction walkways, restricted seating in any performance areas, and the recommended use of facial coverings.

We will limit the number of public visitors on the grounds at any one time, and the types of shows and performances that we will be able to offer, in order to minimize people gathering in large groups. This means that there will not be any large-scale siege of the castle, open field battles, grand parades, musical or theatrical stage shows, and unfortunately no Jousting.

This Year’s Dates have been increased by one day to Friday 28th, Saturday 29th, Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August 2020, to accommodate for the restricted attendance each day.

Day Entry to the Castle Grounds and Gardens for the Medieval Weekend Celebration is from 10am to 6pm daily, rain or shine on 28, 29, 30 or 31 August 2020.

Weekend Entry - a decision has now been made that for the safety and best interests of all members of public, staff and the commnity at large that we will not be able to have weekend camping on the grounds this year. What You can Expect as you enter the beautiful grounds and gardens of Herstmonceux Castle on the August Bank holiday weekend:

- Colourful Medieval Living History tents all around the castle and surrounding fields

- Medieval re-enactors who are looking forward to speaking with you and demonstrating their skills for  you (at a safe distance behind rope lines)

- Medieval, Craft & Retail and Food/Drink Traders who are eager to sell you their wares for the first time this year

- Have-a-go activities with separated spaces, and santitised equipment after every use

- Designated picnic areas, where you can feast on food and drink (ideally purchased from our traders)

- Entry to the castle courtyard across the moat, through the outdoor courtyard and into the walled gardens

- Woodland Trails, Magic Gardens and a rope Maze

Camping (Tents & Caravans) & Glamping Tents - since there will be no Weekend ticket/camping, no tents or caravans will be allowed to stay on the castle grounds overnight, and we will not be hiring glamping tents. (As mentioned above, anyone who has booked these tickets can either roll-over their booking to 2021 or receive a refund.

B&B Rooms on the grounds at Bader Hall will be limited to en-suite rooms only and will be available on a limited basis only. (Anyone with existing bookings has already been contacted, and will be again to re-confirm their options)

Evening Entertainment Unfortunately there will not be any evening entertainment this year. Thi means that we cannot have an enclosed beer/food marquee and evening bands, no torch-lite parade or outdoor cinema.

Medieval Banquet will not take place this year due to the restrictions for indoor gatherings and entertainment. All pre-purchased tickets can be roll-ed over to 2021 or refunded.

What Does this Mean for Tickets?

For anyone who has not purchased a ticket yet, you will be able to book one of the limited Day Entry tickets online starting from 10 Aug 2020, and then up until the tickets sell out.

Please Note that all current ticket holders will be contacted by email to confirm which of the Options they would like for some or all of their tickets

Your Questions: We are sure that you will have questions and we would be happy to answer them, but please bear with us over the next number of days as we continue to get our administration all organised. A Final Word of Thanks & Understanding – We really appreciate all the support from all the members of our ‘festival family’, and we hope that you will decide to come to Herstmonceux Castle on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

We also understand that things are still not the way we would all like them to be, and no matter what we do, you do and others do to ensure that you stay safe and healthy, there will be times and situations when things may not be perfect; and you may feel a bit uncomfortable (as you would in other day-to-day situations). So if you are worried, unsure or just want to play it safe, then please do what you feel is best for you, and if that means that you don’t come to the castle this year, then we look forward to seeing you back in 2021!
